Using it! - Input Focus

$

Focus is where input from the keyboard will take effect. Unlike an application such as Microsoft Word, where the input focus is essentially either in the document or in a dialog; MicroStation has several points where keyboard input can be applied. While most of the time focus will follow your flow of activities, there are many occasions where you need to be sure you are at the right point before entering your input keystrokes. Therefore it is imp...(read more)

[Updated 14 August 2018] We discourage manual editing of this file as it is written to by CONNECT Edition applications during active sessions, updating the value of _USTN_CONFIGURATION (in the [Set Configuration] section of the file) to correspond to the active WorkSpace selected in the User Interface. In nearly all circumstances specifying the Custom Configuration via the installer User Interface is the only method that should be needed to chang...(read more)

New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 10 - Performance Enhancement – Model Drop-Down Picker

$

One of the main areas of focus for MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 10 was on improving performance, especially when accessing the backstage. During our investigations, it was found that some users were seeing a delay accessing the backstage when their files contained a large number of models. This was due to the fact that when going to the backstage, MicroStation would scan the files in the Most Recently Used list to populate the model drop down picker.

In MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 10, the default behavior was changed. The models listed in the Most Recently Used list are now hidden from the model drop down picker, therefore speeding up the time to access the backstage.

If you still prefer to be able to select a model from the open most recently used list, we do have a configuration variable that you can set in order to have the functionality back. The configuration variable that you would need to set is:

MS_STARTSCREEN_SHOWMODELPICKER=1

Test driving PostGIS with Bentley Map CONNECT Edition Update 1

With the release of Update 1 (summer 2018) Bentley Map has added PostGIS support. PostGIS is an extension of the PostgreSQL database, which proclaims to be “the world’s most advanced open source relational database”. Open source has always had a lot of faithful followers in the geospatial community, and many of Bentley’s users have been asking for it.

Please feel free to have a look at the attached document, in which I have described the steps I took to take this new and exciting functionality for a test drive. I sincerely hope it will encourage you to try this out for yourself.

Announcing AssetWise APM v7.11

$

We are pleased to announce the release of AssetWise APM v7.11, now available for general access from Bentley Software Downloads.

 Highlights

  • Features Management is a new function that allows Bentley to deliver technical previews of APM features on a more frequent and selective basis. Now administrators can enable (and disable) preview features in their Test environments.

  • For APM assets with linked i-models, you can select a linked item in the Asset window and launch the DGN viewer to zoom in on the asset in the i-model. This feature complements View Item, which zooms in on (and highlights) just the linked item.

  • Two new features allow greater control over how users change an asset’s status. Employee permission groups can restrict status changes to specified users. On asset types, you can specify the order in which statuses can be assigned.

  • It is now easier to review model and UI changes between APM releases. The Model Changes feature on Enterprise allows you to select a previous release (as far back as APM 7.6) to view charts and lists of the differences between databases or even a specified class. You can also use this feature to list your customizations since a specific date for the current database. This feature replaces Upgrade Difference reports, which are no longer provided with APM releases.

When bridges stop bridging

I have a vague memory of an event, I was probably very young. It must have been a Sunday evening. The construction of a new bridge was near completion in a nearby town. The city council had allowed the population to "walk" on the bridge, the evening before its grand opening to car traffic. My father took us there, to witness that great event, and to be among those who could proudly say they crossed the bridge on foot on the car lanes, something we could most likely never do in the future.

Image author: Adqproductions, shared under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:PONT_DUBUC.jpg

The old, truss bridge had been there since the 30's. It was being replaced because it could not accommodate the increasing traffic. Its central section could rotate to let ships pass, although that feature had rarely been used.

Image author: Chicoutimi, shared under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported.   https://fr.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichier:Pont_Sainte-Anne.jpg

The bridge was a very important feature in the region - providing a link between 2 towns, it was even depicted on packs of local-made butter. In the 80’s, a wisely made photo mock up showing the bridge cut in half, published on the local newspaper on an April 1st, caused quite a stir in the region… The bridge was part of our community.

Before the first bridge was built, the river was quite an obstacle. Subject to tides up to 4 m (13 ft) high, with good current, it was not always possible to cross it safely... a ferry was used in the summer, and an ice bridge was made during the winter. While my grandparents have witnessed a time when there were no bridge, in my mind there has always been a bridge there.

Nowadays, whenever I cross that bridge, or any bridge for that matter, the difficulty of crossing a river does not even come to my mind. The obstacle is just a thing of the past – I just drive on it, as I would drive any other kilometer of road... I don’t realize how handy a bridge is, perhaps because most bridges fulfill their functions perfectly, probably over 99.999% of the time, and there is always a bridge to cross obstacles, wherever I want to go…

That's the thing with infrastructure - it is so well integrated with our lives, that we end up taking it for granted. We just assume it works 100% of the time. That is what infrastructure does - it just "works" and does what it is designed to do. We feel truly miserable when it does not (what can you do during a power failure?), but the vast majority of the time, it works just fine, and we kind of forget how important it is in our daily lives... and we may end up assuming those services are “due to us”.

The disaster that occurred in Genoa last week was terrible. A huge piece of infrastructure failed, killing tens of people. Whether we drive on a bridge, or live underneath it, we don’t normally have to worry about whether it will hold. Infrastructure – such as bridges – is designed to withstand heavy weight, wind, rain, snow, and ice, and last decades. And it does it pretty well.

Of course, infrastructure does not come for free – it is expensive to build, and must be carefully maintained to ensure continued and optimal operation. It is not due to us - it is rather a gift that we give ourselves as a society, to make our lives more comfortable & safer, to accommodate our growing population, and to act as a catalyst for the growth of our economy. Infrastructure is not just important – it is fundamental to the continued operation of our society…

I wish courage to all the families affected by that tragic event.  I wish I could find better words to offer them. For the rest of us, I hope that such a tragic event would give us pause to reflect on all the things we take for granted – including even infrastructure – and perhaps realize how important infrastructure is in our daily lives… and consider that we should treat it as part of the core fabric of our communities...

As part of this update we have added several features which you can test to ensure the features are working properly prior to the commercial release of Navigator CONNECT Edition Update 4. Below is a list of the new capabilities, as well as the link to download the update.

Click on the link to download the Navigator CONNECT Edition Beta Update 4.

  • ProjectWise Sharing: Note: ProjectWise datasource connections that you created in previous versions of Navigator will not display in Update 4. You will need to use Project Share to create new ProjectWise datasource connections for use in Update 4.
  • User Defined Groups: User defined groups are now available for use in Update 4. When you open a model which includes User Defined Groups, you can use this information to navigate the model.
  • Help Sub-Item in Support Page: UI improvements were made to the Support Page to allow you to access the Help more easily.
  • Open File Directly option on the Settings page: From the Settings Page you can now enable the Open File Directly option. When this is enabled, opening an i-model takes you directly to the model, bypassing the i-model index screen.
  • RealTime Collaboration: Real Time Collaboration is now available for use. This allows you to collaborate with another Bentley Navigator user in real time, for more efficient navigation and issue resolution
  • Synchronize cursor between Profile and 3d model: The synchronized location of the mouse cursor between the Profile and the 3D Model is now displayed, as well as the slope of the element at the mouse cursor's location.
  • Dynamic Cross Section Tool:  Using this tool you can interactively cut a cross section anywhere in the model, allowing you to more easily view and navigate parts of the model.

If you have any problems or you would like to send any feedback during your testing of Navigator CONNECT Edition Beta Update 4, you will find a feedback menu entry in the backstage menu. From the feedback menu entry you can send an email to the NavigatorBeta@bentley.com email address which has been created to capture feedback for this technology preview.

Please note that this technology preview of Navigator CONNECT Edition Update 4 is only available for Windows desktop.

Configuration Blog Series – Adapting an Application in a Project

$

0

In the previous blog, you saw how to use application-specific standards for the same project. However, it was missing details about how you place the files and folders within the application-specific standards subfolders. The simplest way to do this is:

  1. Create a template WorkSet “Standards” folder that contains standards for the three applications that will be used in the project, along with the common standards.
  2. In one of the applications, say ORD, create a WorkSpace, and in it create the WorkSet “CityPlan” using the template WorkSet.

Once created, the WorkSet will have the WorkSet’s Standards folder (..\CityPlan\Standards\), with all the standards for each application in it.

But now consider the scenario where one more Bentley application is to be included in the project, say Bentley Substation, for electrical designs. Since your WorkSet is already created, to make Bentley Substation part of the WorkSet, you will have to manually copy Substation’s standards into CityPlan’s Standards folder (..\CityPlan\Standards\Substation) and create Substation.cfg that will contain configuration variable definitions you want to access at WorkSet Standards level for Bentley Substation. Note that this file and folder structure creation process is manual. As of now, there isn’t an automated way to selectively include standards of Bentley applications during WorkSet creation or after the WorkSet is created. This can be useful when applications are included at different times in a project lifecycle and we are looking to introduce something in that regard in near future.

Bentley Institute Student Ambassadors are instrumental in bridging the gap between academic learning and the enhancement of technical skills needed by industry. The global network of students acts as a liaison between Bentley and their schools, facilitating a two-way communication between the institution and Bentley.

Ameya Sanjay Sane from Academy of Maritime Education and Training, Chennai, India was appointed as Student Ambassador in his final year of Naval Architecture and Offshore Engineering course. Ameya was chosen because of his keen interest in Software learning. Throughout his tenure, Ameya has helped his peers understand how they can access Bentley’s solutions and create awareness of the benefits of the same. First, he ensured that the software relevant to their curriculum was installed on the computers of his institution. He also visited all the classes of his department to make the students aware of the various benefits of the Academic Subscription showing them how they can create their accounts on the STUDENTserver and access its benefits. He put together a group of students who were willing to learn Bentley’s solutions and helped them download the software in their computers as well, showing them methods of self-learning by accessing Online Training materials on the STUDENTserver.

In the month of October 2017, he arranged an Introductory session on MAXSURF for the students of his institute which covered the features and functions of the MAXSURF Suite and an Introduction to modeling with NURBS. The session was in hands on - tutorial format where the students had the time to follow the steps on their own computer.

In the month of November 2017, Ameya arranged a follow-up session for students with a basic understanding of MAXSURF Modeler and Stability. The session covered some techniques for modeling tanks and compartments that are more complex than covered in most University level courses. It covered - Linking Tanks to make complex shapes, Using dummy surfaces for complex geometry and Workflow between MAXSURF Modeler and Stability. The session was also in hands on - tutorial format where the students had the time to follow the steps on their own computer.

Ameya continued to provide orientation to his juniors and also created a document wherein he curated all the LEARN Material from Bentley’s STUDENTserver on MAXSURF and shared it with the students for their Online Training.

All sessions were attended by nearly 60 students each time. Ameya’s initiatives created keenness among the students of his department to make use of Bentley’s offerings as a part of their learning to become trained infrastructure professionals. He is thankful to have had the opportunity to assist the students to further their academic learning with the aid of Bentley’s technology.

We would like to recognize Ameya for his efforts as a Bentley Institute Student Ambassador on his campus and wish him luck for his future endeavors!
