New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 12 – Configuration Assistant
The Configuration Migration Wizard is now upgraded to Configuration Assistant that will help you create a CONNECT based Configuration from an existing V8i based WorkSpace. The Configuration Assistant accomplishes a few more tasks as compared to the Configuration Migration Wizard:
- Identifies installed MicroStation and MicroStation based products on your machine and lists the default WorkSpaces for each product.
- Converts legacy User (.ucf) to WorkSpace (.cfg).
- Converts legacy Project (.pcf) to WorkSet (.cfg).
- Moves Site level configuration (by default set to ..\\WorkSpace\Standards) to Organization level (..\\Configuration\Organization\).
- Optionally copies all the project data files.
You can access this tool from the WorkSpace drop-down on the work page:
Or from the File Menu, Settings > Configuration > Configuration Migration
This tool is released as a Technology Preview feature in this update, so you can try migrating your legacy WorkSpace to CONNECT Edition Configuration. You can read the detailed blog post on Configuration Assistant and MicroStation Help for better understanding the tool.

Item Types' EC Expressions - New in MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 12
MicroStation CONNECT Edition Update 12 introduces a new, exciting Technology Preview General Access Feature: Item Types' EC Expressions
The EC Expression framework is extremely powerful and allows us to return a value calculated from properties of the same Item Type.
For example, the expression in the property above will return the result of the multiplication of the property "Volume" by the property "FluidDensity".
What is even more exciting is that you can use an EC expression to extract a property of the element the Item Type is attached to, as in this very same example has been done to define the property "Volume":
Item Types properties defined by an expression are can't be modified in instances and are displayed with the familiar grey text, same as a read-only attribute.
EC Expressions are currently released as a Technology Preview General Access Feature so make sure to test the min your environment and workflows if you want to use them in production in this early stage.

The Reverse Engineering Stops Here?
I used to have this in my email signature:
gnireenignE
As a developer of training, it was my duty – my calling – to save software users from having to reverse engineer how the software worked. Reverse engineering is hard, it’s really time-consuming and it’s error prone. Reverse Engineering the software is supposed to stop with me.
I’ve recently dipped my toe back into migration services for the first time since I started using (and loving) OpenRoads.
Maybe it’s the fact that most of my career has been primarily modeling and only rarely sheeting. Maybe creating sheets from your models is easier that consuming someone else's. Maybe I’ve just fully embraced the idea of working in an immersive native 3D What-You-See-Is-Really-What-You-Got (WYSI-Really-WYG!) environment. It’s probably all of the above, but looking at sheet sets from the “old” 2D modeling days…
Holy Stick Figures, Batman! Trying to make a mental picture of the 3D Engineering in my mind from 2D line drawings is reverse engineering of the worst sort. It’s painful.
Apparently Reverse Engineering is a major component of that old paradigm. Who is good at that? Who enjoys it? How error-prone is it?
I’ve always considered Poetry a high-loss compression algorithm that impairs clear communication. I get that there is a subculture that enjoys it. Unless it’s song lyrics, I have no time for that kind of ambiguity.
I get that there is a specialized experienced sub-group of people who are adept at reading plan sets and perhaps even enjoy the process. Is it fair of me to think of them as cultists who derive status from excelling in a skill that few can master?
Is it rude of me to consider the skill analogous to reading entrails (without the precision or the aroma)?
We see the underlying model being requested by earthwork contractors as they can save a lot of money working directly from the terrain model. Sheeting requires high effort to create, it is prone to error in creation. It takes high skill to consume and is prone to error in interpretation. It persists because when the lawyers get to fighting, all they can handle is paper.
The industry is moving from the paper towards the model. OpenRoads makes the model revelatory.
As a long-time modeler who seldom consumed sheets, and who has fully embraced the WYSIWYG 3D modeling paradigm, I loathe sheets as deliverables. As someone who had dedicated a career to helping others transcend reverse engineering in particular and bad process in general, I loathe sheets in principle.
How bad is it for you? If you are comfortable consuming sheets, how long did it take to feel good about them? How do you feel about the shift to modeling?
Am I wrong not to ever want to work with plansets?
Is my brain simply not big enough for sheets? I'll take your word for it.
Thanks for reading..

Civil Engineers: Masters of Relationships!?
Engineers get a lot of grief for being not good with relationships. I say: No More!
We were always relationship-focused, but we didn’t necessarily know how to manage them. We didn’t quite have the tools. But that was then.
Ask any Hollywood Celebrity or Gossip Reporter: “Do you care about the relationship between this Profile Grade Line and that Edge of Pavement?” They’d surely respond, “Of course not. Who would care about that?” We do, people. We do.
We’re pretty much the unrivaled matchmakers of the infrastructure world. The scope of our caring transcends just people. We create relationships between such seemingly insignificant things as a centerline and a road edge. And not in just one dimension. Multi-planar: 12-foot horizontally, -2% vertically. We care about the depths of relationships: consider a pavement section.
In the past though, we were not very good at maintaining relationships. The slightest change in circumstance would totally wreck our relationships. “The centerline shifted? I’m now surrounded by orphans!” We could recover, but we’d essentially have to start over from scratch.
OpenRoads not only helps you create relationships, it remembers the relationship for you once you’ve created one. This is handy, because with OpenRoads, you’re going to be creating a LOT of relationships. And it’s easy, too. You don’t even need to think about it, really. Just do your thing and OpenRoads will remember. Even a relationship as casual as a snap is important to OpenRoads and it remembers it for you.
But don’t worry about getting bogged down or stretched thin by all these relationships: you don’t even need to think about them. They’re not a burden. They’re normally invisible. Clicking on an object will show you the relationships via the Heads Up Display and through Properties. Literally at your fingertips when you want to reminisce.
Gone are the days of having instantly-forgotten one night stance. “Didn’t I just perpendicularly connect to you 30 seconds ago?” “I don’t remember. But I’ve moved on and I’ve left you behind.” Say goodbye to that pain.
This begs the question “Does this make OpenRoads a bit, um, stalky?” Or “Will OpenRoads get all Spousal with me: ‘Remember that stupid move you made 5 years ago?’” Fortunately, OpenRoads has a suite of tools that help you manage the relationships. In my personal life I wish I had some OpenRoads Relationship Tools:
Deactivate Rules – a temporary Hall Pass where we can re-Activate Rules when we see fit
Deactivate Reference Rules – “stop bringing up that stupid move: it was five years ago!”
There’s a Transform tool where you can transform your circumstance in some standard and custom ways
Remove Rules – a little harsh, but always an option.
There’s even a Complex Redefine tool where you can essentially switch who you have to obey. And once your new Relationship Prowess becomes evident and with your soaring confidence, you’ll probably use this a lot as your social status climbs. And you don’t even need to be “in between relationships”, you can do an instant upgrade.
New Rules Tools are being created all the time. I believe this is based on that old Socialite saying “Once you understand the rules, it’s time for me to change the rules”. Well, guess what? The Rules Rules have changed, and, baby, we’re the Relationships Masters now!
Note: The power WILL go to your head, but use it for good, not for evil. Always, always, always, be respectful in all your relationships.
I need some help.
Hello!
Is there any rich man who will help me getting out of my troubles?
Damn, I wish I were smarter guy when I was 19 years old.
Before I took few loans I had had some real problems like my mom passing away etc.
Nevermind, I will not talk and complain about how my life is destroyed since I lost my parents
Now I try to get out of my problems. I am paying off my debts but it is so huge I cannot afford paying the whole amount.
If is there someone rich who keeps saying “Money cannot buy happiness”, “Money isn’t enough” please hear me:
It would actually bring me happiness. Why? I never had an opportunity to say that. I had really tough start in my life and I failed. I just need second chance to start.
Thank you for reading that brief note.
Due to my hastiness few years ago I took few loands and I am paying it back but it will take almost one year.
Please help me to get out of here! The debt is around 1000 $. Even small amount on my paypal indebt4800@gm ail.com will buy me a happiness!
You can have your HUD back when you pry it from my cold dead fingers
I’m a bit cynical in general. I’m also entering my fourth decade of banging hard on civil software. When the development team was internally previewing OpenRoads to us five or six years ago, they were making a big deal about the Heads Up Display (HUD).
Then: I thought it was a bit gimmicky. “How much time is that actually going to save me?”
Now: “You can take it from me when you pry it from my cold dead fingers.”
Using it for input does save time, but what makes it transformative is its click-and-debug capability. I can click on geometry and determine, just from the heads-up, its relationships, how it was built, and what will happen in the future (if any “parent” geometry is changed). Oh, I can edit the values in the rules right there at the object (radii, offsets, etc.).
Being able to troubleshoot, do forensics, divine intent, change engineering, and see the future with just a click: for me, it’s up there with food, clothing, and shelter.
(with a little layout experience, you could tell exactly how that ramp was built and how it will behave. the video link below (from the Geometry Evaluation training) details the details.)
