Version 26 is here!

The Bentley Hevacomp team are very pleased to announce the new release of Bentley Hevacomp. For the record, this officially goes by the name of Bentley Hevacomp V8i (v26)  but we're more than happy to call it v26.

There have been a number of changes and fixes in this release. A couple of the more notable being the inclusion of BS-EN 806-3 in the Netsys (pipe sizing) program, which now gives you two methods of specifying loading units for your outlets, and of course, there is the eagerly awaited update to the PartL calculation with the inclusion of the 2013 regulations in Design Database.

There are a couple of things to take note of:

For Netsys:

  • An existing (v25) Netsys project will be loaded with the BS:6700 method of specifying loading units selected. If you change this to BE-EN 806-3 then you will need to recalculate your project to see the new results

For Design Database/PartL:

  • Bentley Hevacomp V8i (v26) only contains the 2013 calculation method. If you need to run a 2010 (or even a 2006) PartL for any reason, then you will need to do this in v25. Bentley Hevacomp V8i (v25) and Bentley Hevacomp V8i (v26) can sit happily alongside each other on your computer with no issues.

Finally for Design Database users:

  • When changes such as introducing a new calculation method are made to the software, this also includes changes to the format of the project. As always, we allow older projects to be brought into the newer software, but we cannot then let the updated project be taken back into the older version of the software. The very first time you bring a v25 project into the v26 software a backup folder is created in your project folder called "Version 25 backup" - this contains a full copy of your project in its v25 state, so if needs be you can use this folder to create a master v25 project alongside your v26 project.

Gaming Vs Civil Engineering

Being an avid ex-gamer (ex = I am married with kids now) and present product manager for engineering analysis and design software, every day I think of one thing; when will the engineering disciplines start using gaming technology?

For those who know Tetris or Snake as only existing games (no offense, these games rock!!!)

MGS 5

Batman Arkham Knight

Just to give some perspective, in 2007, consumer spending on games and accessories was9.5$ billion and in 2013, it had raised to 21.53$ billion. So it is one of most rapidly evolving sector with tons of innovation.

To compare it with the Civil engineering design software revenue; my estimated combined revenue of civil engineering software from BentleyAutodeskAVEVATrimble etc. will not exceed 7$ billion. Growth in civil engineering is nowhere near the gaming industry.

To me, these are the advantages that the gaming industry has;

  • Lot of cash to spend on research
  • Attract best computer science talent
  • Extremely competitive, so everyone is forced to come up with the next cool thing
  • Younger user base, which is very acceptable to radical changes

In above aspects, civil engineering software industry is definately not neck to neck to the gaming industry. Interestingly, while developing new games, gaming industry solves many civil engineering problems. Gaming industry has own physics engines which can process thousands if not hundreds of thousands (depending on machine it is running on) particles/rigid bodies per frame. For example, NVIDIA PhysX FleX offers, unified solver for effects, rigid/deformable bodies, phase transition, particle, fluids, gravity control etc.

Check out the video on PhysX FleX

(Please visit the site to view this video)

Civil engineering needs many of these advanced techniques. You may ask, aren't existing civil engineering software good enough? May be they are good for the kind of tasks engineers currently perform, but why not take it further? If civil engineering and gaming industry start working together, wherein core engine is developed by gaming industry, and the applications are developed by the civil engineering industry, we will enter a new era.

Imagine a detailed computer model of Los Angles downtown subjected to various calamities like tsunami, earthquake, fires etc. and the city officials being able to come up with various action plans addressing this complex scenario. Each building will react differently to different forces based on its structural design, years in operations, interior details etc. Structural engineers will be able to perform complex analysis like 3 dimensional fire spread and design structures accordingly within a short time.

Definitely civil engineering is already moving ahead with the use cases that I talked above, but teaming up with gaming industry will give it, say a nitro-booster.

Bentley AutoPIPE V8i is a stand-alone, engineering application for the calculation of piping stresses, fatigue stresses, fluid transient, bowing or thermal transient analysis, flange or pipe support design, and equipment nozzle loading analysis under static and dynamic loading conditions. In addition to 24 piping codes, AutoPIPE incorporates ASME, JSME, British Standard, European, API, NEMA, ANSI, ASCE, AISC, UBC, GOST and WRC guidelines and design limits to provide a comprehensive analysis of the entire system.

This is a patch release for AutoPIPE V8i SELECTseries 5 (v09.06.00.15, released October 2013) which includes several bug fixes including the following critical and major errors.

Critical Errors

* Temperature dependent data not updated on modifying temperature for points range * Different hot modulus value not used for analysis for points on the same pipe ID * Incorrect analysis results with imposed disp. or anchor movement on soil points

Major Errors

* Maximum expansion (EXP) added at moment level not associating thermal case * Thermal bowing: "Instantaneous expansion coeff. for NS materials" is not used * Absolute axial stress not used for calculating expansion stress for B31.3 (2012) * Ce factor and exposure category is not retained in UBC wind profile dialog

We want to sincerely apologize for the delay it required to release this patch. We continue to strive to provide quality products in accordance with our Nuclear Quality Assurance program approved to ASME NQA-1 and therefore must meet these rigorous standards which often requires a lot of effort in testing and verification.

Also included with this release is a new tutorial & sample model for the ISO 14692 FRP code.

LADWP Saves Time, Improves Safety... and Wins an Award! #tbt

This week we’re giving a huge shout out to the people at LADWP - The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power- and the winner of the 2011 “Connecting Project Teams” Be Inspired Award!

As the largest municipal utility in the United States, LADWP seeks to provide its over 640,000 water customers and 1.4 million electric customers with the best service and lowest cost resources available. With more than 100 years of records stored in numerous different systems across the enterprise, finding accurate information to start new project designs was extremely time consuming, challenging, and often unsuccessful.

LADWP turned to the Bentley ProjectWise Software Development kit to customize the system and move it in house – integrating and merging hundreds of thousands of files into one system. LADWP was able to reduce the time spent searching for files by 50% and plotting time by 40%. LADWP also eliminated the need to dedicate resources to maintain and support legacy systems. This ProjectWise implementation provides LADWP with increased productivity, lower costs, fewer delays, and improved safety.

“We are saving approximately $800,000 annually in research time alone.” – Chad Crouchman, senior civil engineering drafting technician, LADWP

Has your organization used Bentley Products to make dramatic improvements like LADWP? Share your project with us and SUBMIT to Be Inspired before the extended deadline on July 17th!

 Happy #tbt!!

J.L. Patterson & Associates’ work on their Cascade Tunnel project earned them a 2013 Be Inspired Award for Winner in Innovation in Point Cloud Processing and Management!

The Cascade Tunnel is the longest tunnel in the United States, located near Stevens Pass, WA. This tunnel functions as a vital passageway for cargo shipped from countries in the Pacific Rim to the rest of the U.S. J.L. Patterson & Associates was approached to help survey and model the tunnel for alignment and clearance envelope improvements.

Tunnel access was very limited due to time constraints – but JLP was not to be de-railed by the challenge ahead of them! They utilized MicroStationand LiDAR technology to model the 7.8 mile interior tunnel surface, including both track and notch alignments. By using powerful regression models, JLP was able to reduce construction duration, cutting costs by 90%!

Has your organization ‘conducted’ itself in an innovative way as well?

The deadline for Be Inspired has been extended to next Thursday– so get those submissions in and share your great work with us by SUBMITTING to Be Inspired today!

I hope everyone has a great #tbt!
